Review by Scott M, July 2002
First off, tracks 1-12 are
Dave Goodman demos from the infamous 'Spunk' bootleg LP (later re-released
as 'No Future UK', with some extra tracks). The basis of these tracks
has filled the majority of Sex Pistols bootlegs ever since. Tracks
12-15 are the bands first ever demo session with producer Chris Spedding,
which originally featured on the 'We Don't Care' bootleg single.
Tracks 16-20 are Chris Thomas 'NMTB' outtakes, which originally appeared
on the 'Party Till U Puke' bootleg, and then as bonus B-sides on
the 1992 re-issue's of 'Pretty Vacant'. Track 21 is a further Dave
Goodman demo from 'No Future UK'.
Virtually all the tracks have
appeared on other bootlegs, but I think this is enough info for anyone,
at least it should be… Despite the fact this official Virgin
1996 CD set has been titled 'Spunk' (aka 'This is Crap'), as you can
see it contains much more material than just 'Spunk'.
When 'Spunk' was first released
in 1977 it featured alternative names for many of the tracks, such
as
"Nookie" instead of "Anarchy in the UK" etc etc.
The real track names appear in brackets above. Basically it was a feeble
attempt by the bootlegger to trick people into thinking they were new
unreleased tracks. These titles still cause much confusion today.
Due to time restrictions,
and to try prevent over duplication (there were already FIVE versions
of 'No Feelings'!), many of the tracks on this set do NOT appear on
the 2002 Sex Pistols Box Set. With the exception of track 16, they
are all Dave Goodman demos from 'Spunk/No Future UK'.
However, to slightly confuse
things, the version of 'Pretty Vacant' on the Box Set is from the July
1976 Dave Goodman sessions, but features Steve Jones' Beatles piss-take
intro which is actually from the January 1977 session. At one point
the July 76 version of 'Pretty Vacant' was on the Box Set
but was dropped for the other. However, it was decided to keep the
intro, as it seemed an ideal way to start Disc 2 of the Box Set, "On
behalf of the band I hope we passed the audition…"
Track 16 is a Chris Thomas
'NMTB' outtake, which appeared on the 1992 'Pretty Vacant' CD single,
as 'Submission version 1'. Version 2 from the 1992 'Pretty Vacant'
12"
single appears on the Box Set, and incidentally, it is version 2 which
is used on the end titles of 'The Filth and the Fury' movie.
For me the 2002 Sex Pistols
Box Set is the definitive Sex Pistols compilation. However, for the
completest, given that so many of the tracks featured on this 'Spunk/This
is Crap' compilation do not appear on the Box Set this is still an
essential purchase. Between this comp and the Box Set you will have
it ALL…

in the meantime below is a brief break down of the tracks featured
